The Labour government has scrapped a £950 million Rapid Charging Fund originally launched by the Conservatives to expand the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The fund was intended to support rapid chargers across motorways and key A-roads, aiming to ease range anxiety and accelerate EV adoption.

Labour argues that the fund is no longer needed due to growing private sector investment, and says its decision reflects a broader realignment of green spending priorities.

However, the move has drawn criticism from industry figures, including Quentin Willson, founder of FairCharge, who called the decision a “serious mistake.” He warned that cancelling the fund could slow EV adoption and undermine the UK’s progress in building a reliable, nationwide charging network — particularly in rural areas and on long-distance routes.
